Brian's story: grey, yay or ney?

Blog buddy Brian emailed the following story to uniquelyu@helloross.com:

"Here's my dilemma: I've gone grey. There are those who regard this as a sort of badge of honor for waddling through the decades I've managed to survive. They say it is what has been earned from simply living for a period of time that extends beyond the ability of my body to produce whatever it is the makes your hair not look like a corpse. And I'm not entirely in disagreement with that. Getting to wherever I am now was not all that easy. Suffering was involved and if it shows on top of my head. It happens.

Meanwhile, there feels like an "I-give-up" mentality to going with the grey. I'm old. I'm done. The End.

So I feel caught between the pull to let nature take its course and the idea that maybe if I tossed a little color in the mix I might feel a bit less played-out.

Ross -- I know you mentioned that the flecks of gray in your hair helped you feel a bit closer to your father. (My father, who died when I was in college, was bald, so I don't want to feel that close).

Could some color help spark a new energy for me, or should I be proud of the 'experience' that shows on my head? Please weigh in with your thoughts."

  1. I like grey hair. Mark Harmon? Hottie! And I enjoy him much more now than when he was younger and had brown hair. For myself, I hope my hair looks as good as Tyne Daley's when it goes grey.

I think coloring is a very personal choice, for men and women, tho. If you're not comfortable with grey hair, by all means, color it to give yourself time to get used to the idea. But when you can embrace it & own the grey, so to speak, go for it! : )

    Just one gal's opinion here!

  2. Well, you can try a non permanent hair color and see how it makes you feel first! That way there's no commitment. You can get all kinds of semi-permanent hair colors that wash out after a few days or weeks. Try it both ways and see what you think!

  5. I understand completely! I started going grey at 24, and my sister (and a couple of friends) have been telling me to color my hair for years. I don't mind it all that much, but I think it is a personal choice. Of course, I did decide to try some highlights a couple of months ago and love it.

  6. I have to say, that I color my hair, and it does make me feel better to cover the gray. With that said, coloring your hair is maintenance, but worth it for me. If I were you, I would try it and see if you like it. Go with a color that is closest to your own natural color.
    I hope this helps! :)

  7. Go with what feels right for you. Altough I recenlty learned in the lastest issure of Discovery magazine, that going grey has nothing to do with age but with stress levels. Here is the link to the article:

As a bald man, I say enjoy the hair you have :)

  8. Brian, Honey, Your "spark" comes from within!!! Don't add color to your hair!!! If you are feeling colorless.....add color to your wardrobe. Shades of blue look marvelous with grey hair. Chin up and go shopping!!!

  9. Well, I am 38, mostly grey...or more like steel - ish silver salt n'peppa, shiney white and loving it!. I get so many compliments and people asking which salon they need to go to so they can "get that hair"...LOL.
My suggestion is to just let it be. I think grey hair on men is SEXY !!!!!!!!!

  10. I think that most men look really good with their hair cut very short, and regularly cut. The color matters very little if you keep the length short. Very stylish - the clean cut.
